"I-Saw-a-Butterfly" is a reporting app that takes advantage of Mobile high-end technology to provide quality data on butterfly sightings, based on the concept of getting maximum data with minimum typing.

This app, aims at citizen science observers (Europe and Israel), is an extended version developed by 'GlueCAD - Biodiversity IT' for the EU BON project (Building the European Biodiversity Observation Network). It currently covers all European butterfly species with a specific focus (and pictures) on Estonian and Israeli species.

EU BON is funded by the European Union under the 7th Framework programme, Contract No. 308454.

Content:

• 3 different species-lists which include: 483 European Butterflies scientific-names (based on Fauna Europaea), 105 Estonian with common/Estonian-names and 145 Israeli species with common/Hebrew-names.

• Online link to Wikipedia info for every scientific name

• Online link to weather web-based data from the closes weather station

• Menu language option through app setup includes English, Estonian and Hebrew.

Reporting observations:

Observations of European/Estonian species lists are communicated by the app to PlutoF server (University of Tartu, Estonia) which provides cloud database and computing services for the biodiversity researches.

PlutoF team provides API services that enables posting observations for the EU BON Citizen Science Portal and cooperated fruitfully with GlueCAD development efforts.

To report observation to the European server, register first with https://plutof.ut.ee

Observations using of Israeli butterfly list are reported to GlueCAD server.

Users can register to either one or both server to start reporting.

Main Features:

• User can select species name from a List or from a Family album of pictures

• Select camera to take picture and document an unidentified butterfly (currently for Israeli list)

• Data is either selected or clicked. No typing except "Remark"

• GPS location, altitude and time data is recorded

• Offline recording with auto-send of stored data when mobile Internet is gained back (currently for Israeli list)

This portal contains and manages the bank of Israel Butterflies and the Israeli National Butterfly Monitoring Schema (BMS-IL).
